Turning a Marten Part 1

It just takes a few minutes once you know what you're doing.  First Bryan removes cardboard inserts and the pins.

Then he pulls out the belly stick.
Then he turns the nose inside out with his thumbs.
And nose is pushed into mouth.

Then pushed more in with his thumb keeping his left fish closed around the hide.
With the belly stick thick end he slowly pushes the hide inside out.  ALWAYS KEEPING HIS FIST TIGHTLY AROUND THE TOP OF THE TURNING HIDE IN A TIGHT CIRCLE.   If YOU DO NOT DO THIS RIGHT YOU CAN PUNCTURE THE HIDE.
So the movement is mainly with his left hand that is holding the fur.  It releases the fur and moves down and makes another tight circle then he pushes further with the belly stick.

 Next he turns the lips

  2. A tip my partner (an old native gentleman that was my mentor when I started trapping in BC ... 35 years ago) gave me was to set the boarded marten pelt outside for 1/2 an hour or so after removing all the pins. If it's good and cold out, it seems to generate a bit of moisture (frost?) in the hide that makes it supple enough to help in turning. This works especially well for heavier hides like coyotes, etc.

  3. Yes Tom.... I do that also. Sometimes a grab a handful of snow and rub it on the hide and let it sit for 30 minutes outside. thanks for bringing it up.
